Beauty Chat with Claire Burke, Co-Founder of Goby

OK, so walk me through your morning beauty routine. I hop in the shower -- with Goby in hand, I’m a shower brusher! -- starting with hot water and decreasing the temperature until it’s very cold. I’ve heard this is very good for your skin, and it also has the added benefit of really waking me up! Next, I freshen up with Clarins face wash, followed by Embryolisse moisturizer. As for makeup, I stick to a pretty natural look so like to keep it simple with Glossier skin tint, stretch concealer and boy brow and Dior mascara. When I’m feeling fancy, I’ll use Anastasia’s contour kit.

What time do you wake up? Any rituals like meditation? I roll out of bed at around 7 am. I’ve been working on incorporating meditation into my routine. I downloaded Headspace a few weeks ago (a bit late to the game, I know), and I love it. It amazes me how those few minutes of mindfulness can travel far into the rest of your day. I try to drink hot water with lemon after meditating.

In the morning, what products do you use? DIY, indie, drugstore finds? Beyond the ones mentioned above, I’m a huge fan of Not Your Mother’s dry shampoo for days where I don’t wash my hair. I’m a Harry’s user, too.

Do you have a favorite toothpaste or mouthwash? I’ve been on a toothpaste craze recently -- trying to find the perfect product that keeps my mouth feeling clean for more than just the 15 minutes after I brush. Most recently I’ve been using Marvis, which has a nice balance of foam and flavor.

I have to ask. Afternoon brush? Is this something you do? I read you should just rinse with water after each meal vs. brush. Thoughts? Having been called Cavity Claire as a kid, I grew to be hyper conscious about my brushing routine. I definitely am one of those people you see carrying their toothbrush to lunch so they can sneak in an afternoon brush.

Any daytime beauty routine? Lip balm. Lip balm. Lip balm. Dior’s Creme de Rose is my favorite.

Tell me about your night time routine. Any special products? After using Clarins face wash and toner, I use Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery. I also try to do a face mask a few times a week. My favorite is Origins with active charcoal. Once I’m done brushing with my Goby, I also floss at night.

Five Must-Have Makeup Brushes

What's in my makeup bag, you ask? These five brushes. Here's why they need to be your staples:

1. Blending Brush - this round tip eye shadow brush is used for detailing and blending in the crease of your eye to add depth and contour. A great starter palette to create the perfect natural eye look is this one from Urban Decay.

2. Eyeshadow Brush - this flat head eye shadow brush is used for all-over application from lashes to brows. My favorite shadow combo is this Kalahari duo from NARS.

3. Angled Liner Brush - this stiff brush helps to create a perfect line when applying a gel liner like this one from Bobbi Brown.

4. Angled Blush Brush - this versatile brush is made for contouring and blush application using a palette like this one from Urban Decay - it's my favorite!

5. Kabuki Brush - this soft-bristled brush should be used for face powders and bronzers like this one from Bobbi Brown.

I know that most of these brushes are for the eyes and I typically don't do a full eye look every day (laziness), but I'm telling you these tools have been a life saver for when I do want to glam it up. Plus, the products above are perfect for a more natural look, which I prefer day and night.

My Everyday Beauty Routine

CMJ_BeautyRoutine_1.jpg

I've been in the beauty industry for quite some time now, but I've never had a go-to beauty routine until recently. I used to just use free products I scored from gift bags or product closets, but thanks to endless hours of reading Sephora reviews and watching YouTube videos, I found my beauty essentials! I feel so grown up - like these will be the products I cry over when they are discontinued.

What's even better about my round-up is that it takes me no more than five minutes to get ready in the morning with these products. So, if you're looking for a low-maintence beauty routine that will keep you looking young and fresh AND get you out of the door so that you're no more than ten minutes late to work, buy this stuff.

Feeling Knotty - Get It?!

cmj_feelingknotty_1.jpg

You guys! I know it’s been a while, but I have a few things to share:

1. I was on a mission to cut my hair last week and A) I don’t like now and B) I’m deeply distraught because I want my hair to look like it does in these pics. Why do I make such bad decisions?!

2. I’m literally obsessed with this white t-shirt and I keep buying it instead of washing it. Again, what is wrong with me? #issues

3. I found these sunglasses at the cutest shop in Athens, Georgia and pretty much every four-year-old in Park Slope has the same pair. Now what.

4. I almost bought a pair of Vans, but instead stumbled upon these rad Timberland sneakers. That’s correct, I said Timberland. Impressive.

5. Zara had the biggest sale ever and I snagged this skirt. As I do with all Zara items, I completely messed up the laundering situation (reason = tag…) and it shrunk. How sad, right?
